1月11日，湖南省农业科学院与南县政府战略合作签约暨航天搭载种子返回交接仪式举行。
南县县委副书记、县长钟剑波将装有2000克的“南洲香2号”“南洲香3号”南县稻虾米专用品种航天种子和公证书的交接箱，交付给省水稻研究所副所长、研究员周政，南县稻虾米品种研发进入“航天+”时代。
2024年9月27日，南县稻虾米专用品种继登上神舟十六号载人飞船后，再次进行“太空历练”。南县稻虾米专用新品种“南洲香2号”“南洲香3号”随神舟十九号载人飞船进入太空，每个品种搭载1000克，共2000克；在14天的太空之旅中，南县稻虾米专用品种种子历经高真空、微重力、强辐射太空环境的淬炼，于2024年10月11日返回。
生物种子航天搭载试验是水稻育种的一项重要技术，相比传统育种技术，该技术突变频率高、范围广，有望在短时间内创制出高产、优质、抗病等优良种质资源，是获得农作物优良品种资源的重要途径。在第一次太空育种试验中，科研人员发现了很多的优势变异植株，其中谷粒变长、稻秆增粗等具有应用价值的变异单株达52株。此次“南洲香2号”和“南洲香3号”再次进行航天搭载试验，将助力南县筛选出品质更优、抗性更强的“南洲香4号”“南洲香5号”等系列品种。
2016年，南县县委、县政府大力推广实施稻虾米种植，面积从5.7万亩增至2024年的62万亩。南县稻虾米是中国地理标志证明商标产品，南县是“中国虾稻米之乡”“国家级稻虾米全产业链生产标准化示范区”。“南县稻虾米”区域公用品牌价值为231.1亿元，居南方大米首位。（湖南日报全媒体记者 杨玉菡 郭朵朵 通讯员 崔志文）
